Spinal Adjustments
Dr. Ryan Sangjun Baek offers expert, targeted, hands-on adjustments for misalignment (subluxation) of the spine. He specializes in the Gonstead technique, which is a gentle yet proven method of caring for the spine. Central to the method are thorough evaluations and precise, accurate adjustments. Dr. Baek has been a practitioner (and instructor) of the Gonstead method since 2008.
Before any adjustment, Dr. Baek will thoroughly examine the entire spine to find the area that may be interfering with nerve function and causing pain. This will include full-spine digital X-rays for easy identification of posture, joint, and spinal disc integrity; the X-rays are taken while standing to better understand how the patient experiences the issue.
In some cases, an electromyograph (EMG) may be used to assess muscle and nerve health. Electrodes are attached to the skin to capture electrical activity of muscle tissue and translate them into a visual display.
And that’s not all, because our whole-body approach is not limited to spinal adjustments.
Acupuncture
Imagine a network of pathways through which energy flows and animates your body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, this life force is called “qi” (pronounced “chee”) and it flows through your body along pathways known as “meridian channels.”
Acupuncture – the placement of thin needles into strategic locations in the body to relieve various pains and discomforts – can regulate a patient’s qi. Acupuncture allows a health care practitioner to grow, develop, and help balance a patient’s qi.
Dr. Baek is a certified acupuncturist and has vast knowledge and experience using acupuncture to relieve a host of symptoms, including headaches, bladder dysfunction, indigestion, yin/yang imbalance, and sexual or reproductive issues.
Additional Therapeutic Approaches
Our whole-person approach to health care includes educating patients about their condition, as well as what they can do themselves to reduce symptoms. This may involve lifestyle changes as well as some or all of the following:
- One-on-one exercises. Dr. Baek will develop and guide patients through therapeutic exercises tailored just for them. The exercises selected will vary depending on a patient’s health, condition, and other factors.
- Myotherapy massage. This hands-on massage targets the soft-tissue pain associated with myofascial pain syndrome, a situation involving chronic muscle pain. Trauma or overuse can cause muscle tissue (“myo”) to form a tight, painful knot known as a trigger point, affecting the connective tissue that covers the muscles (“fascia”). When pressure is applied to these trigger points, pain is experienced and can spread elsewhere in the body. Myotherapy massage can loosen tight muscles to relieve this pain.
- Electric muscle stimulation (EMS). A type of therapeutic treatment used to reduce pain and inflammation as well as improve circulation. It involves the use of electrodes placed on the skin, which supply mild electrical currents that stimulate muscle contractions. This may help to strengthen weak muscles and help release tense or locked-up muscles.
- Ultrasound. A popular therapy that utilizes a device called a transducer, which is rubbed lightly over the skin at the area of injury. Ultrasound therapy delivers sound waves deep into body tissue, heating the area to help break up tight muscles, and reduce swelling and pain.
